BOSTON - Dog-racing opponents are back with another campaign to end greyhound racing in Massachusetts.
The Committee to Protect Dogs says they’ve collected 100,000 signatures in support of a statewide ballot question next year. That’s far more than the number of signatures needed to take the next step toward getting the question on the November 2008 ballot.
A dog-racing ban could doom the Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park and Wonderland Greyhound Park in Revere. Both tracks have signaled that they want to build a casino if lawmakers approve Governor Deval Patrick’s plan to expand gambling in the state.
A ballot question in 2000 banning greyhound racing was narrowly defeated. Last year, the state’s highest court ruled a similar question could not be placed on the ballot because of technical issue.
