Thanksgiving Story

OK so we had a big turkey for Thanksgiving. A really big turkey. How big was it, you say? Well, it was sooo big that it took up the whole cutting board when carving it. While busily carving it, the juice from the freshly cooked bird started to pool on the board and drip onto the floor.

Next thing I know, the cat comes and is licking from the newly forming turkey-juice puddle on the floor. Of course he didn't notice that the juice continued to drip from the board and onto his head which was now perched squarely under this new source of turkey goodness. Not to be left out, the dog appears a few seconds later and instead of challenging the cat to his prized puddle, he starts licking the juice from the cat's head.

It was quite a sight while it lasted. The cat licking the juice from the floor and the dog licking the juice from the cat's head!

That's a good one! My Slick T ate a whole pan of cinnamon rolls that I baked for my husband's birthday. I first blamed my hubby for the incident since he LOVES cin rolls, but... when I couldn't FIND the pan, I realized it was our newly adopted hound trying out her new counter surfing skill. We finally found the pan under our couch.

I adopted my first greyhound in May of 2002. I had been wanting a greyhound for several years, and after I got laid off from my job, I was at home, watching Animal Planet, and there was a show on greyhound adoption. That was on a Wed. I told my husband that was what I wanted to do and he agreed. So, I contacted the 3 adoption groups in my area and only one returned my phone call. I filled out their application, was approved, and was told to come to a M&G on Sat. and there would be a couple of dogs for me to choose from. Now my husband was handicapped and in a wheelchair, so I wasn't sure how the dogs would react to that. When we got there, there were 2 dogs for us to see. My husband came rolling down the sidewalk in his wheelchair and one of the dogs, a female named AB Valid Divine, ran towards him, put her paws in his lap and gave him a big kiss. Well, that was that!! We took her home with us and looking back now, it was as though someones hand was guiding us. Divine was sent to me for a purpose. Two months later, my husband passed away and I now believe that is why she was sent to me. She has opened up a whole new world of wonderful friends and unforgettable hounds to fill the void I was left with. I became the Foster Chairman for Southeastern Greyhound Adoption in Atlanta, GA and through them discovered that I loved working with and fostering senior greyhounds. I remarried, moved to Florida and found out that I would be living very near the adoption group called GPA/Senior Sanctuary of Florida. Fate steps in again for me and I am now the Vice-President of this group and have fostered more than 20 senior hounds. Senior hounds are truly the best kept secret in greyhound adoption!! I wish more people could experience the pure pleasure and love you receive from taking these senior citizens into your homes and hearts. There is nothing like it!!

Sincerely, Marty Crites

I have a senior hound that we are blessed with that is 13 years. We have had her for 8 years and have watched her fawn face grow white. Slick T can still play like a young hound with her fuzzy toys and run around the back yard with grace!

Several years back, we fostered a greyhound named Firestick. At the time we had him, he was a hyper, young hound... just 2 yrs. Challenging to be sure! We loved him though and felt fortunate to have him in our lives for a short time until he was ready for his forever home. As I was originally told when I adopted my first greyhound... "Greyhounds don't bark. They are not good watch dogs". I thought about it, but after meeting Firestick, I never say that statement again to anyone. I'm sure it's true in a general sense. One day, I was upstairs cleaning, when I kept hearing Firestick barking wildly. Since I only heard barking from my Slick Tm (she is a GREYT watch dog), I came running downstairs to see what the commotion was about. To my surprise, Firestick was barking at a fire that started on my counter from a candle that exploded. I was able to put out the fire, calmed Firestick down and felt blessed that God sent him to us. Firestick saved our home. After a week or so, Firestick found his forever home. I think of him occasionally and wish I could see him again.

Wow. these stories are wonderful. I don't have a dog right now...my last was a rehome for a senior girl who stole my heart then died suddenly. I can't do it again just yet.

This guy could be lime green and he would be beautiful inside and out. He was my 10 year anniversary (of having greyhounds) gift to myself. I got to watch him grow up from 3 weeks old so he and I have an amazing bond. Thank you for the nice compli...
